Richard J. Robbins
Dick Robbins is a leader in tunnelling machine technology.
He joined the Robbins Company, which was founded by his father,
in 1958 two years after graduating from Michigan Tech with
a degree in mechanical engineering. Just three months later,
his father died in a plane crash and Dick was thrust to the
head of the firm. The Robbins Company has grown and prospered
and now employs 290 people at its Kent, Washington, facility,
and 330 worldwide. The Robbins Company is part of the Atlas
Copco Group, an international industrial company involved
with rock excavation, rock transportation, rock support and
light construction. Robbins serves as vice chairman of the
board. His company has been responsible for a string of breakthroughs
and records in tunnel boring technology, including the boring
of the "chunnel" - three huge tunnels under the
English Channel.
