From Tech Today Oct 8, 2007

Two faculty members in the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics have agreed to serve as associate chairs, William Predebon, the chair of the department, has announced.

Professor Craig Friedrich was named associate chair and director of graduate studies. He replaces Professor Carl Anderson, now the associate dean of engineering.

"Craig brings a great deal to this position," Predebon said. "He's a very active and respected researcher in microelectrical mechanical systems (MEMS) and in nanotechnology, and he's an excellent graduate student advisor.

"He's also been a finalist for the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and is a member of the Academy of Teaching Excellence."

Professor Charles Van Karsen is the new associate chair and director of undergraduate studies, replacing Associate Professor Donna Michalek, who is serving as assistant provost.

"Chuck has earned a Distinguished Teaching Award and is a leader in noise-vibration-harshness research," Predebon said. "He's well respected in industry and is active in advising our graduate students, who are in high demand by industrial employers."
