1996 PECASE AWARDEE - JOHN W. SUTHERLAND

Associate Professor John Sutherland (ME-EM) is one of twenty researchers nationwide chosen to receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Through the award, the President of the United States recognizes the scholarly activities of some of the nation’s most outstanding science and engineering faculty and their potential for leadership in academic pursuits. The award carries a grant from the National Science Foundation of $100,000 annually for five years, subject to the availability of funds. The award allows recipients to undertake self-designed, innovative research and teaching projects, establish research and teaching programs, and pursue related activities early in their academic careers. Sutherland graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and served as vice president of a firm specializing in applied manufacturing research prior to coming to Michigan Tech in 1991. At MTU, his research focuses on manufacturing. He has published numerous articles in professional journals and is coauthor of the textbook Statistical Quality Design and Control. In 1992 Sutherland received the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and was also a recipient of the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award. The figure below shows Sutherland receiving the award from Dr. Joseph Bordogna, NSF Acting Deputy Director and Dr. John H. Gibbons, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology
