LIFE-CYCLE ENGINEERING LABORATORY
Michigan Technological University

The MTU Life-cycle Engineering Laboratory is housed in MEEM 705.  The laboratory is running full bore, housing graduate and undergraduate researcher.

The MTU Life-cycle Engineering Laboratory main mission is research projects.  Therefore the main service we offer is the capability to do cutting edge research in life-cycle engineering on a flexible schedule.  We are always open to new research topics, but our current research areas are shown below.

  Current research areas include:

  • design theory and methodology
  • life-cycle design
  • product and process architecture
  • lean engineering
  • environmentally conscious design

As a lab, we also do quite a bit of short course work for companies and some short term product and process assessment and design work.  We love doing this work and can accomodate short schedules.

In addition to the above mentioned research and laboratory facilities, we teach two clases, MEEM 5653 - Life-cycle Engineering and MEEM 5990 - Lean Manufacturing, that make use of industrial examples.  We always welcome new parterns to make use of our classroom services.

  Classroom services include:

  • life-cycle product assessment - including a relative assessment of various life-cycle costs incurred by the product and a product redesign based upon that assessment
  • lean process assessment - redesign using particular lean tools and overall assessment

Services are available to any person or company for a fee.  Special arrangements can be made for local companies and services are included for all participating research partners.
