MTU Alpine Ski Team Places 16th at Nationals
The MTU Alpine Ski Team recently returned from Loon Mountain, New Hampshire where they were competing in the United States Collegiate Skiing Championships. They placed 15th in the giant slalom and 17th in the slalom to finish 16th overall out of 19 teams.
Bad luck consistently plagued the team. On Thursday in the Giant Slalom 2 of MTU's skiers(including their top seed) had trouble on the course and had to hike. The other three skiers managed to stay on their feet but had troubles. Greg Goodman, one of the teams best GS skiers suffering from severe back pain all season managed to make it down but could not ski as well as he would have liked due to his injury. George Peet placed the highest for Tech finishing 48th out of 100.
In the Slalom MTU's top finisher was DJ Longhini in 16th place, one position out from being placed on the All-American team. The rest of the team skied well but little mistakes led to costly falls due to the icy conditions. Chris Dehlin after having trouble in the first run skied an excellent second run that was 30th fastest for that run.
The winners of the event were Sierra Nevada College who placed first in each event. In third place was St. Olaf College from Minnesota.
Michigan Tech Could hold it's heads high though as they placed two individuals, Chris Dehlin and Todd Matelski, on the academic All-American first team and one on the honorable mention list, George Peet.
Participation in this event is supported by the Office of Student Activities and the Parent's Fund of the Michigan Tech Fund and the Undergraduate Student Government.
