The life of a Jake

Hello, my name is Jacob Caverly and I am a freshman here at Michigan Tech. This year, along with other members of our web-journal group, I will be offering a glimpse into the life of a first year student through the eyes of a first year student and not through Michigan Tech’s viewpoint.

I went to Freeland High School, located in the Saginaw area of Michigan, and graduated with a 3.993 grade point average, salutatorian of my class. I can tell you it was quite nerve-racking realizing that I would soon be heading off to college, right after my high school graduation. High school had been good to me, I was section leader of the Trombone Section and during football season, I was the Drum Major of the 140+ student Marching Band. That was a blast. I also performed with the Central Michigan University High School Honors Band in both 2002 and 2003, comprised of 60 of the best musicians in the area, it was really an honor to make it and I enjoyed it.

Aside from music, my other hobbies include: playing paintball, archery, radio control car racing, computers, hunting and fishing. I have the largest interest in any kind of motor-sports, which heavily influenced my decision to become a Mechanical Engineer. I am a huge NASCAR fan and try to attend at least one event per year.

Thus far, Michigan Tech has been very good to me, and I am enjoying the beautiful country immensely (I highly recommend a visit up here). For this first semester I am taking a 17 credit hour schedule, consisting of Calculus I, Mathematics Technology Lab, Chemistry, Chemistry Lab, Engineering Fundamentals, Physics Lab, and Pep Band. I look forward to sharing my life as a freshman with you in the future!
