A Legacy of Action:
Prof. Almon P. Young

Associate Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering

Almon P. Young was appointed the acting head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering July 1, 1948 and appointed as Department Head in 1950, serving until retirement in 1963.

Professor Young joined the Michigan Tech faculty in 1930 as an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering, promoted in 1936 to Associate Professor and in 1948 to promoted to Professor. Prior to that time he served a six-year period as manager of the Nadiad Industrial Institute of Nadiad, India. In 1918 he served in the U.S. Army and subsequently did engineering work for the General Electric Company. Later he worked for the Ross Gear and Tool Company. Professor Young holds a B.S. and M.S. from Purdue University.

He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society for the Advancement of Engineering Education, and the American Welding Society. He authored many research papers in engineering journals.

He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Scabbard and Blade, and the American Legion.

He was known for his work with the Boy Scouts in the local community.
