Description: The timing of combustion within a diesel engine is one variable that greatly effects the amount of nitric oxides and particulate matter exhausted. The goal of this research is to develop and test accelerometers for detecting the start of combustion within a diesel engine on a cylinder to cylinder & fire to fire basis. This research has applications to flex-fuel bio-diesel engines, high EGR engines, and Premixed charge combustion.
