FACULTY POSITIONS: Michigan Technological University, Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics “ME-EM” invites applications for four tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant, Associate and Full Professor levels. Applicants for the positions must have earned doctorates in Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field that contributes to the strategic initiatives of the department (http://www.me.mtu.edu/abet/index.html/). The ME-EM Department is committed to excellence in research and education. Our department is ranked in the top 25 nationally based on research expenditures (NSF, FY2005) and on our undergraduate program (US News & World Reports). Faculty hiring will be focused in the following cluster areas, which have faculty representation in the ME-EM Department and across the University. Candidates with an interest and experience in sustainable systems, as applied to the following areas, are desireable.
Advanced Power Systems: The mission of the Advanced Power Systems Research Center is to develop critical technologies for clean, efficient and sustainable power systems. The Center is seeking candidates with expertise in I.C. engines, and renewable energy systems with interest in bio-fuels, fuel cells, combustion modeling and/or experimentation.
Engineering Education: The Engineering Education Innovation Research Group aims to improve student learning and motivation while implementing new projects to improve the education of Michigan Tech students. The Group is seeking candidates with expertise and a record of scholarship in areas that include innovative pedagogy, entrepreneurship, instructional technology, K12 outreach, and curriculum development.
Mechanics and Bio-Materials: The Mechanics of Multiscale Materials Research Group is seeking candidates with research expertise in experimental mechanics with emphasis on composite materials and/or biological tissues, as well as computation modeling of hierarchical materials, structures and interfaces such as biomaterials, cellular materials, and artificial organs.
Multidisciplinary Dynamics: The Multidisciplinary Engineered Dynamic Systems Research Group is seeking candidates with expertise in the following areas: numerical vibroacoustics, active structures, active control of MEMS/NEMS, model correlation/updating, multi-body dynamics modeling and optimization.
Sensors: The Multiscale Sensors and Systems Research Group is seeking candidates with expertise in the area of sensor development and design with applications in one or more of the following areas: biotechnology, nanotechnology, alternative energy and conversion processes, and harsh environments for the automotive and process industries. Of particular interest are sensors and wireless sensing systems for biomedical and health diagnostics using biomarkers, advanced manufacturing process monitoring, biomass and alternative energy utilization, vehicle monitoring and fault detection, and distributed sensing systems for security.
Space Systems: The Space Systems Research Group is seeking candidates with expertise in experimental research related to chemical rocket propulsion, space robotics, space power, smart/deployable structures, and the broader area of micro/nanosatellite technology.
At Michigan Technological University, Sustainability informs research at a university-wide scale. Candidates who are also interested in research that fits within the theme of “Sustainability” should send a separate application for one of the ten growth positions in that area as described at www.mtu.edu/sfhi.
The ME-EM Department and Michigan Tech encourages minority and female applicants. Michigan Tech is located in Houghton in the heart of Upper Michigan’s scenic Keweenaw Peninsula. Lake Superior is just a few miles from campus and the surrounding area is perfect for all types of seasonal outdoor activities. Applicants should submit a vita, teaching and research interest statement, a statement of experience with diversity issues, diverse students, or working in multicultural environments, names of three references, and copies of three publications to:
