General Information
The 17th International
Conference on Design Theory and Methodology (DTM) will be part of
the ASME 2005
International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers
and Information In Engineering Conference, to be held in Long
Beach, California from September 24 - 28, 2005.
This conference is sponsored by the Design Theory and
Methodology Committee of the Design Engineering Division
of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers.
Call for Papers
The Design Theory and Methodology Conference (DTM) promotes research
and dissemination of knowledge in such topics as scientific theories of
design, foundations for design environments, models of design
processes, design education methods, design management, design for
quality and other areas extending the understanding of and application
of the design process. Scholarly papers in all areas of design theory
and methodology are invited.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Advances in Design Theory, Representations, Methods, and
Formalisms
- Creativity and Innovation in Design
- Design Behavior Study and Cognitive Modeling
- Validating and Verifying Design Theories and Methods
- Making Better Decisions in Engineering Design
- Risk Based Design
- Designing in Collaborative and Distributed Environments
- Product Archicture Design Methods
- Theory and Methods for Sustainable Product Development
- Widely Applicable Techniques for Improving Design
Practice in Industry
- Set-based Approaches to
Engineering Design: A Special Session in Memory of Allen C. Ward.
In the last year, the design theory community lost a highly
regarded and beloved member, Dr. Allen C. Ward, in a tragic airplane
crash. One of his significant contributions to the field was his
theory of set-based design-how reasoning and communicating about sets
of designs rather than single, point solutions results in more
effective design processes. This call for papers requests
submissions on work that is based upon or related to Dr. Ward's theory,
including but not limited to: set theory applied to design, interval
propagation, methodologies for set-based concurrent engineering.
We hope to assemble a session of papers that build upon his
contributions as a small tribute to Dr. Ward and this important aspect
of his life's work.
- The Impact of Design Theory and Methodology on Design
Education (and vice-versa) - (part of the special
DETC-wide sessions on Design Education). This DTM session will be cross-listed as
part of a single-day symposium sponsored by the Design Education
Committee. Papers are invited that discuss the transfer of various
threads from DTM research (e.g., Design Structure Matrix methods,
Decision-Based Design, DfX, Product Platforms, Function-Based Design,
etc.) into design education - how they have been integrated, where in
the curriculum, and how successful this transfer has been. Also invited
are papers that discuss the role of design education in shaping DTM
research as inspiration, as laboratory, or as testbed.
