Off-Campus Ph.D. Program
Introduction
Michigan Technological University (MTU) has established an Off-Campus
Ph.D. program to serve the needs of highly motivated and exceptionally
qualified employees. The program can accommodate individuals in areas
consistent with the strategic interests of their employer and MTU's
expertise. Eligibility requirements for the program participants are
described below.
Program Description
The Off-Campus Ph.D. program is focused on creating technical experts
in areas of interest to the student's employer. Students desiring to
be considered for the program should first secure the approval of their
employer and then contact Professor Predebon (see address below). Once
admitted to the program an advisory committee must be established for
the doctoral student. The student advisory committee may be chaired
(student's major advisor) by an MTU faculty or may be co-chaired between
the student's employer and MTU. Coursework taken toward the completion
of the student's doctoral degree can be taken from other universities
but must be approved by the student advisory committee.
A key element of any student's Ph.D. program is the direct interaction
between the student and advisor. To facilitate student-faculty interaction,
it is anticpated that the MTU faculty advisor will spend three to six
months in residence at the student's employer, advising and directing
the doctoral student's research. The doctoral student will be expected
to spend approximately two weeks in residence at MTU for each of the
qualifying, comprehensive, and final doctoral disseration defense examinations.
In addition to the successful completion of the above-reference examinations,
a minimum of 20 semester credits of graduate courses beyond the M.S.
degree are required. All doctoral students must maintain a continued
enrollment of at least six credits per semester (course and/or research),
three credits of which must be taken from MTU.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the program MTU requires that candidates have an
M.S. degree in engineering or a closely allied field. A cumulative GPA
of at least 3.5 for graduate-level coursework is expected. In addition
to the MTU requirements for the program, a candidate must also receive
approval for program participation from their supervisor.
