Two ME-EM alumni received Michigan Tech alumni awards during the August 2009 reunion. John Calder (BSME '67) received the 2009 Outstanding Service Alumni Award and Michelle Boven (BSME '99) received the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

  Donald Boldt (BSME '58) has been named to the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2009. Don played football at Tech from 1954-57, having been named both a most valuable player and the top defensive player during his playing time. He stayed on for one year as assistant coach after graduation.

On Monday September 28, 2009, John (BSME '64) and Cathi Drake hosted a one-hour seminar: "Entrepreneurship: What It Is, What It Takes, What It Returns". John is the owner/chairman (retired) of Drake Manufacturing Services and sponsor of the ME - EM John and Cathi Drake Endowed Professorship See the video " What It Is, What It Takes, What It Returns"

At the opening of the Fall semester the featured speaker was Dr. Terry Woychowski, a 1978 Mechanical Engineering graduate of Michigan Technological University. He is vice president, global vehicle program management, General Motors Corp. He addressed the College of Engineering First Year Student Assembly, Mon., August 31 at the Rozsa Center at Michigan Tech. The title of his talk: "Engineering - How Will You Change the World?"
  On October 8, 2009, Dr. Terry Woychowski (BSME '78), Vice President, Global Vehicle Program Management at GM, gave a seminar entitled "Leadership - Changing the World Through Influence".

  PARTsolution was featured in the article "Find a Part" in the August 24th edition of Aviation Week.com in respect to PARTsolution's multiyear agreement with Boeing for software and services for their 3D catalog management. Timothy Thomas (BSME '81) is CEO of PARTsolution.

  Chris Klaes (BSME '91) has been named to the 2009 class of the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame. He participated in track and cross country from 1987 to 1990 and is one of the most decorated runners in Michigan Tech history. He still holds the university record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and was named the GLIAC outdoor track MVP in 1990. He was also a GLIAC indoor champion

Glen Simula GS Engineering of Houghton, MI, has been awarded a $25 million, five year contract with US Special Operations Command. Glen Simula (BSME '91) is the President of GS Engineering. Read more details

Tanya Klain: Alumna, Supporter of Tech, Passes

A devoted supporter of Michigan Tech, Tanya J. (Wareham) Klain, 41, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, Dec. 7, from complications following recent surgery.


Emeriti & Distinguished Faculty

The Emeriti & Distinguished Faculty Fund

An endowment fund has been established to honor Emeriti and Distinguished* Faculty. Alumni will have the opportunity to participate in helping support this Fund by honoring YOUR favorite professors and, if you wish, you may contribute your own stories, inside or outside the classroom, about your favorite professors.

*Distinguished Faculty are faculty who had been at Michigan Tech for at least 10 years.


  Daniel Huber (BSME '00) spent seven months as a volunteer for the global charity known as Mercy Ships, a Christian-based volunteer organization that has operated hospital ships in developing nations worldwide since 1978.  Five of those months were spent in Liberia, where he worked to maintain the hospital ship's power.  Read the whole story

Teik C. Lim Professor Teik C. Lim (BSME '85) returned to Michigan Tech to address the ME-EM graduate students on October 2, 2008.  His seminar titled "Modeling, Analysis and Control of High-Speed Gear Dynamics" was presented as a part of the ME-EM Grad Seminar series.  Lim is currently the Department Head of the Mechanical Engineering department at the University of Cincinnati.   Professor Lim is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). His numerous honors include the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, and the ASEE Ferdinand Beer and Russell Johnston Jr. Outstanding Mechanics Educator Award.   He was recently awarded the prestigious Chang Jiang Chair Professorship by the Chinese Ministry of Education to serve as an academic and research advisor to Chongqing University and to direct a research team in the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Transmissions.

Merle Potter Merle Potter (BSME '58, MSME '61) received the 2008 James Harry Potter Gold Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers "for making a renowned impact on thermodynamics through 42 years of outstanding teaching and through published textbooks on thermal sciences and applied mathematics, and for research on energy consumption in dwellings and industrial plants."  He will receive the award on November 3, 2008 during the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition in Boston, Massachusetts.  Merle is also a member of the Department's Academy of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Mechanics.

John Calder

A native of Highland Park, MI, John Calder earned both his BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1967 and his MS in Business Administration in 1977 at Michigan Tech. When he graduated in 1967, he completed nine interviews and had eight job offers.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, Ron Starr received his BS in Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Tech in 1967. From there, he journeyed to Pennsylvania as a research engineer for ALCOA. Returning to Canada, Starr’s interests expanded into financial planning and later, into a position leading a company that produced playground and recreational equipment.

Over the next 16 years, he worked at several other companies: Saginaw Products, Republic Corporation, and Beckton Dickinson in Los Angeles, CA.

Kyriaki (Kiki) Kalaitzidou (MSME 2002) has been awarded third place in the Quadrant Award 2007 competition.  Quandrand is a global leader in the manufacture of high-performance thermoplastics and composites.  Kiki's thesis was titled "Exfoliated Graphite nanoplatelets as Reinforcement for Multifunctional Polypropylene Nanocomposites".  The academic jury who awarded the prizes comes from internationally acclaimed universities or institutions.  They appreciated "the innovative use of graphite platelets and the progress made towards carbon fibre or carbon nanotube substitutes in polymer composites" of her thesis.


Hallquist

John O. Hallquist (PhD in ME-EM in 1972) elected to the National Academy of Engineering

John O. Hallquist, president, Livermore Software Technology Corp., Livermore, Calif.  was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. John is also an indutee to our Michigan Tech ME-EM Academy. Dr. Hallquist was cited for the development of explicit nonlinear finite element methods and their worldwide dissemination in the DYNA family of programs.

Michelle L. Boven '99 is 2006 Distinguished New Engineer

Michelle L. Boven (Stevens) (BSME'99) has received the 2006 Distinguished New Engineer Award from the Society of Women Engineers, Detroit Section. The award is presented to members who have shown great leadership through SWE and the industry. It recognizes past accomplishments as well as future potential in the field of engineering. Boven was also featured as a 2006 "New Faces of Engineering" winner in the SWE magazine. Michelle is a Dow Automotive Development Specialist. See the Dow Automotive Michelle L. Boven News Article


Korey Kiepert

Korey Kiepert '97 designs roller coasters

Korey Kiepert is a design engineer with The Gravity Group that specializes in the creation of roller coasters. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering '97and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering '99 for studying fatigue effects of composite materials. VandeVusse

First company in the State of Michigan to produce alternative fuel

Richard VandeVusse (BSME '77), owner of Ag Solutions, was featured in the article "Ag Solutions cuts ribbon at new plant" in the September 2006 issue of Upper Peninsula Business Today. Ag Solutions opened a new plant in Gladstone which will be the first company in the State of Michigan to produce alternative fuel. Ag Solution produces biodiesel, a renewable, biodegradable fuel that can be used in place of petroleum diesel or heating oil. They plan on producing 5 million gallons the first year and 15 million next year. Governor Granholm attended the ribbon cutting ceremony along with Agricultural Director Mitch Irwin, Congressman Bart Stupak, and Representative Tom Casperson.

New Machine Design CAD Library

Timothy Thomas (BSME '81) is General Manager of PARTsolutions, LLC. According to a news release by Penton Media, Inc., "Penton Media's Design Engineering group, anchored by Machine Design magazine has entered into a strategic partnership with PARTsolutions, LLC, a leading provider of publishing solutions for 2D/3D digital parts catalogs, to launch the Machine Design CAD Library, a powerful, new resource for design engineers. Located at www.machinedesign.com/cadlibrary <http://www.machinedesign.com/cadlibrary>and free to design engineers, the Machine Design CAD Library includes millions of configurable 2D and 3D CAD models of components and assemblies downloadable for easy use in new and existing designs." Mr. Thomas has made software donations to MEEM through his company PARTsolutions.


chief vehicle engineers

Three of the General Motors corporation's chief vehicle engineers graduated from Michigan Tech. All of them are mechanical engineers. Terry Woychowski '78 leads the largest vehicle platform-GM full-size trucks. Doug Parks '84 is the chief engineer for small cars, including Saturns and the Chevy Cobalt. Dave Hill '65 has perhaps the sexiest job of them all-the chief engineer for the Corvette.

Klaus Weinmann, Professor, Chair and SME Fellow

Dr. Klaus Weinmann, former chair of Mechanical Engineering Department, recently retired after 33 years at Michigan Tech. He was recently elected to the Grade of Fellow in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He was presented with his Fellow medallion and pin in November.
