Prior to 2018, she was Chair and Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California in Santa Barbara. Why did you choose Michigan Tech? Growing up in Metro Detroit, the Keweenaw environment (including the snowfall) was a huge draw. My father, who had graduated from U of M, spoke highly of the engineering program at the university and even his own desire to attend there but could not due to the distance and travel constraints for him and his family. Bob Monica attended Michigan Tech after serving in the United States Army during World War II, and in 1950 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He continued his education at Princeton University, earning a Master of Science degree in Plastics Engineering in 1952. Dean Diver earned B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Tech in December 1965 and began his career as a Project Engineer with Amoco Chemical Corporation in Joliet, Illinois.
