Research Assistantship—MEMS Sensor Design and Fabrication
Michigan Technological University
Position Description:
The Multi-Scale Technologies Institute (MuSTI) at Michigan Technological University has an opening for a doctoral graduate research assistantship starting in fall 2007. The candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary research team of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and chemists working on MEMS chemical vapor sensor arrays. The team is developing new fabrication methods, chemical coatings, and design automation strategies for improving sensitivity, selectivity, and robustness of nerve gas and other chemical vapor sensors. More specifically, this position will:
* Investigate sources of variability in the fabrication processes
* Characterize fabrication uncertainties so that they can be accounted for during optimization
* Work on system design and packaging issues (i.e. integrating commercial pumping, filtering, and gas handling components with sensing chip)
* Explore non-lithographic techniques for creating micro-sensor arrays
We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate for research in this area. Candidates must have a B.S. or M.S. degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science or a closely related field. MEMS fabrication experience is desired but not required.
About Michigan Tech: Michigan Tech is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The community offers a small-town environment with outstanding four-season recreational opportunities.
Michigan Tech has a multiuser MicroFabrication Facility. The 6500 square foot research facility features submicron photolithographic capabilities, diffusion processes, a wealth of thin film deposition and etch capabilities, and a set of metrological tools for process and device characterization.
